Google analytics is one of the enterprise class platform available for free to measure your website analytics. Using Google analytics you can find out detailed information on #number of visitors, time spent on site, % of new visits, bounce rate, where your visitors are living and many more details.

Lot of Google analytics data is aggregated or separated to minute details. If you are an executive want to know social media traffic trends to your website you can check referring sites section under “Traffic sources”. This basically shows all the site sending visitors to your website. This could be your second blog or traffic from other directories or a site like facebook.com

Here the challenge is it doesn’t specify how much traffic is generated from social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, reddit or diggit etc. You can’t see the aggregated social media traffic trends and how it compares to overall site traffic.

While Canada is getting ready for elections on May 2nd 2011 I am seeing more advertisements on YouTube, CTV online and Facebook. Many of my friends are sharing their views on the politicians and everyone has their own opinions or what party they support. Then I started noticing some tweets from different politicians. I am not a fan of politics and never paid any attention before. But this year definitely they got my attention using the social media.

Being an online marketing consultant I got curious on how Canadian politicians are using social media to reach the voters. Can the political social buzz give us some hints on who will win the elections in 2011? The reason why I say it is more than ever people are expressing their views online using social media and blogs or simply social web.

Conservative Party – Stephen Harper On Facebook And Twitter

Looks like Stephen Harper team is active on top social networking site Facebook and also on Twitter. I haven’t came across any video ads on YouTube or CTV. We have noticed many fake account for all politicians. Here are the screenshots from Facebook and Twitter, Honorable Prime minister has 50,000 fans on Facebook and 128,000 followers on Twitter.

Liberal Party – Michael Ignatieff On Facebook And Twitter

Liberal party leader Michael Ignatieff has more fans on Facebook and using more Facebook applications than any other top politician. As per Facebook he describes himself as a reporter and human rights teacher. On May 2, 2009, Ignatieff was officially endorsed as the leader of the Liberal Party by 97% of delegates at the party convention in Vancouver. The vote was mostly a formality as the other candidates had stepped down. Below are the screenshots from Facebook and Twitter, he has 91,522 followers on Twitter and 57,280 fans on Facebook.

Most of the ads I have seen on CTV video or YouTube are from NDP party. With nearly 82,000 followers on Twitter and more tweets to followers tahn any other politician looks like NDP party is engaging more with the voters. I am surprised to see the Prime Minister Mr. Harper’s Facebook fan page doesn’t have any general information like “about”,  not a lot of photos and didn’t see use of any applications. I believe that having this information definitely helps.

Does it mean NDP is doing better job reaching to voters than other Canadian parties using social media? I guess so, but who will be the winner? we got to wait for the election results.

Have you ever thought some hackers might have access to your website? May be not! You may be thinking, I am a small business owner who would want to hack my website? On the internet a website of any size can be compromised for various reasons.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) –- You don’t want SPAM back links

One valid reason related to search engine optimization is to build thousands of back links to gain instant boost in search engine rankings. This is NOT GOOD FOR Your Website; this is often referred as Black Hat SEO. Google’s pagerank depends on the number of back links your website has and Page rank is one of the variables of Google algorithm that determines your website’s rankings on Google. The more links you have the better but NOT From link farms and content networks. What sp@mmers does is, they create theses massive link networks for instant traffic boost to adult or pills selling websites.

When a website is compromised what you see is lot of SP@M links/pages hosted on your hosting account. Generally website owners have no idea on what is happening on their website. It’s because they never notice anything unusual when they access the website. What spammers do is they create thousands of links containing words like Vi@gr@, p1lls, weight loss and host malware pages on your site without your knowledge. They even use some websites to sell these!

Google takes malware seriously and by participating in the link spam your website can suffer in seo rankings. Your website may be still ranking for your business name but if this carries on for long time Google will remove the site from its index. You have to start all again after cleaning all the mess.

We suggest spending more money to get a better website that is securely hosted. It is well worth the pain you may have to go through later on!(Site down, stealing your customers data, infecting their computers..etc.)

How to find out if your site is compromised with malware?

Google webmaster tool reports malware on your website hosting account. All you have to do is register your website with Google webmaster tools and check the section called malware under diagnostics. If your site is not compromised this is what you see (click on image), otherwise you will see a last crawled date and when the malware is noticed. And also by registering your site you will get an instant email if it ever happens again.

Use Yahoo Site Explorer to Find Links on your website

If your website is not crawled by Google regularly it may take months to get a notification from Google. Another way you can find out is by checking your website links using Yahoo site Explorer. Once you enter your website URL, click on explore URL.

Click on pages, this shows the pages indexed from your website, you will see approximate number of pages and also links that looks like in the image on right (click on image), if you notice any unidentified pages check your website to find those pages. If you don’t see these links on your website, it means there is something not right with the site.

Now click on Inlinks, this shows you website inbound links. Change the “show in links” settings as shown in the image below to find out inbound links. If you see lot of links from sites unrelated to your industry and if you see links from website selling drugs this means SP@M!

What is Link building for SEO?

Link building is one of the techniques used in search engine optimization where search engine optimizers acquire inbound / back links to a website from relevant websites to improve search engine rankings. Every link pointing to the website is counted as a vote and the many quality back links your website have the better. This will also help to boost the site page rank.

For example a real estate website can have inbound links from other realtor websites and also from industry sites like CMHC, homebuilders association etc. They are all related to the same industry and this helps Google and other search engines to rank the website high on search engines for any real estate keywords.

This process needs to be executed tactically without getting any reduction in search engine ranking positions (SERPs). Because of some link building practices one can get paid back links to the website to boost SERPs.  Basically some pay for website owners to purchase links. You may have heard link farms or link schemes, they are similar. Google always advised against buying links and if you suspect any website involved in the link forms you can report them to Google.

Black hat Link building – New York Times exposes J.C. Penny!

What New York times exposed about J.C. penny was that J.C. Penny has been participating in link schemes to gain high search engine rankings for certain keywords like “dresses”, “bedding”, “furniture” etc..They have been ranking for these terms like #1 on Google apparently for the entire holiday season. After the NYtimes exposed whole link scheme Google took manual penalty action on J.C. Penny website. Many of their keyword rankings are dropped from #1 placement to #68 – #70. Any search engine rankings beyond page 3 on Google virtually gets no traffic!

Link building best practices for SEO:

There isn’t any definite guide on link building best practices, the below are most commonly used best practices to build inbound links.

• Create something that has value for your community or industry; this will naturally create back links for your website.
• Create listings from local web directories; look for the free directories that only accept quality submissions.
• Participate in Q&A websites, offer your expertise to the community
• Look at your competitors, check their back links. If you have a common supplier or manufacturer you can get a link
• Write articles – submit them to many sites that publish your content for free
• Do press releases – you can write a press release about a new product or service you are offering
• You can also use affiliates – many of the affiliates have their own websites and request a back link from a featured page
• Create badges that will create back links to your website. Offer these badges for free
• Offer free tools, free information sessions or webinars and request for a free blog. Ask for people to share the link on social networking sites.
• Participate in forums – be a real person and offer something valuable for the forum, do not spam to get a link. You might get kicked out of the forum.
• Sponsor community events – generate press coverage and get a link back from all new paper websites
• Post job openings to industry authority websites and many free job posting sites
