Canadian Politicians Using Social Media To Reach Voters

Apr 17, 2011   //   by Krishna Lakkineni   //   Blog, Social Media  //  1 Comment

Top 3 Canadian politicians are using social media to reach the voters?

Canadian Elections May 2011

While Canada is getting ready for elections on May 2nd 2011 I am seeing more advertisements on YouTube, CTV online and Facebook. Many of my friends are sharing their views on the politicians and everyone has their own opinions or what party they support. Then I started noticing some tweets from different politicians. I am not a fan of politics and never paid any attention before. But this year definitely they got my attention using the social media.

Being an online marketing consultant I got curious on how Canadian politicians are using social media to reach the voters. Can the political social buzz give us some hints on who will win the elections in 2011? The reason why I say it is more than ever people are expressing their views online using social media and blogs or simply social web.

Let’s take a look at which party leader has more search interest on Google, who has more followers on twitter and Facebook fans. You can follow the twitter list here,

Below is the search interest for the political party leaders on Google (last 30 days),

Canada Politicians Search Interest

Conservative Party – Stephen Harper On Facebook And Twitter

Canadian prime Minister on Facebook

Looks like Stephen Harper team is active on top social networking site Facebook and also on Twitter. I haven’t came across any video ads on YouTube or CTV. We have noticed many fake account for all politicians. Here are the screenshots from Facebook and Twitter, Honorable Prime minister has 50,000 fans on Facebook and 128,000 followers on Twitter.

Liberal Party – Michael Ignatieff On Facebook And Twitter

Liberal party leader Michael Ignatieff has more fans on Facebook and using more Facebook applications than any other topCanadian politicians on Facebook politician. As per Facebook he describes himself as a reporter and human rights teacher. On May 2, 2009, Ignatieff was officially endorsed as the leader of the Liberal Party by 97% of delegates at the party convention in Vancouver. The vote was mostly a formality as the other candidates had stepped down. Below are the screenshots from Facebook and Twitter, he has 91,522 followers on Twitter and 57,280 fans on Facebook.

New Democrats Party – Jack Layton Using Facebook And Twitter

Most of the ads I have seen on CTV video or YouTube are from NDP party. With nearly 82,000 followers on Twitter and more tweetsNDP Party Using Social Media to followers tahn any other politician looks like NDP party is engaging more with the voters. I am surprised to see the Prime Minister Mr. Harper’s Facebook fan page doesn’t have any general information like “about”,  not a lot of photos and didn’t see use of any applications. I believe that having this information definitely helps.

Does it mean NDP is doing better job reaching to voters than other Canadian parties using social media? I guess so, but who will be the winner? we got to wait for the election results.

Good Social Networking on Facebook – Do this , not that!

Do This #1 – Always recognize people that connect with you.  Post a warm appreciation for them taking the time to become friends.
Don’t Do This #1 – Posting your signature with links to all your sites or worse, any affiliate links.  Remember this is a ‘social’ network and people will be turned off by this in a huge way.

Do This #2 – Create a heartfelt connection with your new friends or fans.  Learn a little about them to engage them in conversation.
Don’t Do This #2 – Slam your new friends or fans with sales pitches, mlm promotions or any type of business partnership.  Building the connection, then the relationship will naturally get them to start asking questions of what you do.

Do This #3 – Build curiosity about yourself, products or services.  Posting questions relating to your products or services to get your friends and fans talking and interacting with you.
Don’t Do This #3 - Never ‘sell’ or sales pitch to your friends or fans.  People are tired of being sold to.  They want to know you more, learn about you which will open doors and make them feel more comfortable.  If you are constantly trying to ‘sell’, your friends and fans will be turned off.

Do This #4 – Keep your profile and wall active.  You spent the time to set up your Facebook account, don’t neglect it.  Post at least once a day or every other day so that your friends and fans know you are consistently active.  Keep what you have to say interesting and try to talk with your friends and fans, not talking at them.
Don’t Do This #4 – Updating your wall 50 – 100 times a day.  This is a huge turn off.  If you have something to say that many times, then Twitter is where you should be.  Updating your wall that many times on Facebook is like spamming.

Do This #5 – Set up a proper Fan Page for your business.  Your fan page profile, description, about you, company information, etc. should be completed thoroughly.  Creating a banner for your fan page profile picture will create a more professional look.
Don’t Do This #5 – Not setting up a Fan Page for your business.  Trying to work a business through your personal Facebook page is frowned upon and you could get a lot of complaints.  This could cause your account to be frozen by Facebook.  Fan pages are where people go to know more about you and your business.

Do This #6 – Add your blog posts to your Fan Page.  Your blog posts are a great way to get your fans interacting with you.  Your blog posts are free information which brings value to your fans.  Once you are established, you can ‘like’ your blog post which will go over to your personal wall.  This is a way to introduce other friends and visitors to some great information and building curiosity to know you more.
Don’t Do This #6 – Adding your blog posts through your Facebook notes page.  Some people feel that an RSS feed of your blog posts to your notes provides all the information your fans will want.  However, if your fans make it a habit to visit your ‘notes’ then you will not get them to visit your blog site.  It is better to post on your Fan Page so that they are taken to your site.  It will promote interaction between you and your fans.

Facebook Deals | Facebook Marketing For Your Business

Jan 31, 2011   //   by Krishna Lakkineni   //   Blog, Featured, Social Media  //  7 Comments

Facebook Marketing – How to leverage Facebook Deals to Get more Customers?

Facebook introduced Facebook Deals in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. Facebook deals is a new way how businesses can be loyal to customers and generate awareness.

facebook marketing for businessFacebook Deals is similar to check in on Foursquare and Groupon deal of the day. On Foursquare when someone checks into a business on their mobile device they can find deals from businesses offering deals. On Groupon you sign up for deal of the day and invite your friends to do the same to get the huge discount. There should be a minimum number of friends need to sign up to trigger the offer. This means huge volume of customers for a business.

Now businesses can leverage foursquare and Groupon features using Facebook. Businesses can pull more crowds to their business using Facebook places check in. Here we are referring to more local customers who pass by your brick & mortar store every day!

How Facebook Deals work?

  • Businesses participating on Facebook deals will upload a coupon describing the deal. There are Four types of deals available.
    • Individual Deal – This is like when you check in you will see a discount offer from the business you checked into. This could be a free doughnut with a coffee purchase or an offer like buy one get 50% off on the second item.
    • Friend Deal – This is similar to “Groupon sign deal of the day”. You check in to the business and invite your friends and family to check in to be eligible for the offer. If you are running a restaurant you can offer a lunch deal. Buy five lunches at $15 each($20 value), a friends group must have #5 members. Share savings with friends.
    • Loyalty Deal – If you have a regular loyal customer show your loyalty to them by offering a deal. Encourage them to buy more. This is one of the best ways to keep your customers. If you are a coffee shop you can offer a deal like “Every 1oth cup of coffee free!” The customer needs to check in 9 times when they buy coffee.
    • Charity Deal – If you are a business that are more community oriented encourage your customers to check in every time they visit. Donate a portion of the revenue to your local charity.

Remember, every time someone checks in on Facebook using their mobile device it shows up on their wall for their entire friends network. Generally friends are influenced by friends, they are more committed to do the same as their friend. Every wall post is like a recommendation to their friends.

How to Claim A Deal at your favorite retailers, restaurants, entertainment venues?

facebook-places-checkin

  1. Open Facebook on your mobile device, if you have a latest version of the app you can see places icon. Select places to find nearby businesses on Facebook Places.
  2. Look for an yellow or green coupon next to the business listing. These are the businesses participating on Facebook Deals.
  3. Select place’s name to see the discount or charitable donation the business is offering. If your are interested in that deal, check in and show your phone to responsible person at the business to claim the deal.

This is a simple but powerful way to build awareness about your business and keep loyal customers. Check out more information on Facebook Deals here.
