Link building is one of the techniques used in search engine optimization where search engine optimizers acquire inbound / back links to a website from relevant websites to improve search engine rankings. Every link pointing to the website is counted as a vote and the many quality back links your website have the better. This will also help to boost the site page rank.
For example a real estate website can have inbound links from other realtor websites and also from industry sites like CMHC, homebuilders association etc. They are all related to the same industry and this helps Google and other search engines to rank the website high on search engines for any real estate keywords.
This process needs to be executed tactically without getting any reduction in search engine ranking positions (SERPs). Because of some link building practices one can get paid back links to the website to boost SERPs. Basically some pay for website owners to purchase links. You may have heard link farms or link schemes, they are similar. Google always advised against buying links and if you suspect any website involved in the link forms you can report them to Google.

What New York times exposed about J.C. penny was that J.C. Penny has been participating in link schemes to gain high search engine rankings for certain keywords like “dresses”, “bedding”, “furniture” etc..They have been ranking for these terms like #1 on Google apparently for the entire holiday season. After the NYtimes exposed whole link scheme Google took manual penalty action on J.C. Penny website. Many of their keyword rankings are dropped from #1 placement to #68 – #70. Any search engine rankings beyond page 3 on Google virtually gets no traffic!
Link building best practices for SEO:
There isn’t any definite guide on link building best practices, the below are most commonly used best practices to build inbound links.
- Create something that has value for your community or industry; this will naturally create back links for your website.
- Create listings from local web directories; look for the free directories that only accept quality submissions.
- Participate in Q&A websites, offer your expertise to the community
- Look at your competitors, check their back links. If you have a common supplier or manufacturer you can get a link
- Write articles – submit them to many sites that publish your content for free
- Do press releases – you can write a press release about a new product or service you are offering
- You can also use affiliates – many of the affiliates have their own websites and request a back link from a featured page
- Create badges that will create back links to your website. Offer these badges for free
- Offer free tools, free information sessions or webinars and request for a free blog. Ask for people to share the link on social networking sites.
- Participate in forums – be a real person and offer something valuable for the forum, do not spam to get a link. You might get kicked out of the forum.
- Sponsor community events – generate press coverage and get a link back from all new paper websites
- Post job openings to industry authority websites and many free job posting sites

Good Social Networking on Facebook – Do this , not that!
Do This #1 – Always recognize people that connect with you. Post a warm appreciation for them taking the time to become friends.
Don’t Do This #1 – Posting your signature with links to all your sites or worse, any affiliate links. Remember this is a ‘social’ network and people will be turned off by this in a huge way.
Do This #2 – Create a heartfelt connection with your new friends or fans. Learn a little about them to engage them in conversation.
Don’t Do This #2 – Slam your new friends or fans with sales pitches, mlm promotions or any type of business partnership. Building the connection, then the relationship will naturally get them to start asking questions of what you do.
Do This #3 – Build curiosity about yourself, products or services. Posting questions relating to your products or services to get your friends and fans talking and interacting with you.
Don’t Do This #3 - Never ‘sell’ or sales pitch to your friends or fans. People are tired of being sold to. They want to know you more, learn about you which will open doors and make them feel more comfortable. If you are constantly trying to ‘sell’, your friends and fans will be turned off.
Do This #4 – Keep your profile and wall active. You spent the time to set up your Facebook account, don’t neglect it. Post at least once a day or every other day so that your friends and fans know you are consistently active. Keep what you have to say interesting and try to talk with your friends and fans, not talking at them.
Don’t Do This #4 – Updating your wall 50 – 100 times a day. This is a huge turn off. If you have something to say that many times, then Twitter is where you should be. Updating your wall that many times on Facebook is like spamming.
Do This #5 – Set up a proper Fan Page for your business. Your fan page profile, description, about you, company information, etc. should be completed thoroughly. Creating a banner for your fan page profile picture will create a more professional look.
Don’t Do This #5 – Not setting up a Fan Page for your business. Trying to work a business through your personal Facebook page is frowned upon and you could get a lot of complaints. This could cause your account to be frozen by Facebook. Fan pages are where people go to know more about you and your business.
Do This #6 – Add your blog posts to your Fan Page. Your blog posts are a great way to get your fans interacting with you. Your blog posts are free information which brings value to your fans. Once you are established, you can ‘like’ your blog post which will go over to your personal wall. This is a way to introduce other friends and visitors to some great information and building curiosity to know you more.
Don’t Do This #6 – Adding your blog posts through your Facebook notes page. Some people feel that an RSS feed of your blog posts to your notes provides all the information your fans will want. However, if your fans make it a habit to visit your ‘notes’ then you will not get them to visit your blog site. It is better to post on your Fan Page so that they are taken to your site. It will promote interaction between you and your fans.
